Manila, Philippines – September 30, 2025. — The Philippine International Convention Center (PICC), Asia’s first international convention center and a National Cultural Treasure, has reopened its doors following an extensive renovation that weaves heritage with innovation.
The reopening ceremony underscored the PICC’s enduring significance as a national symbol of Filipino architecture and artistry and as a premier stage for cultural, economic, and diplomatic events.
The reopening ceremony was graced by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and First Lady Liza Araneta – Marcos, and led by Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Governor and PICC Chairman of the Board Eli M. Remolona Jr. together with PICC General Manager Nicolette Ann P. Cruz.
“The renovation of the PICC was meant to preserve a landmark of Filipino ingenuity,” said Governor Remolona. “For nearly 50 years, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas has been entrusted with the stewardship of this institution, ensuring it remains a world-class venue that honors Filipino heritage and hosts international events,” he added.
“The reopening celebrates a space where tradition meets modernization. From curated art pieces to upgraded meeting rooms and facilities, every detail is intended to elevate the guest experience while honoring the building’s architectural integrity,” GM Cruz said. “As one of the most visited National Cultural Treasures, the PICC is now more than ready to again showcase the Philippines on the global stage,” she added.
Countdown to Its Golden Year
The PICC was constructed with the issuance of Presidential Decree No. 520 on July 23, 1974. Completed in less than two years and inaugurated on September 5, 1976, it addressed the nation’s need for a world-class venue and earned international recognition for its design and facilities.
Recently honored with the first Tourism Excellence Award for MICE Venue at the prestigious Philippine Tourism Awards, the PICC affirms its reputation as a trailblazer and industry leader. As it nears its 50th anniversary, it embarks on a pivotal chapter with the Philippines’ hosting of the ASEAN Summit in 2026.
To prepare for this historic event, the PICC underwent restoration and modernization—an endeavor befitting the magnum opus of National Artist for Architecture Leandro V. Locsin. Heritage experts, architects, engineers, and artisans collaborated to preserve Locsin’s original brutalist vision while introducing contemporary upgrades. The result: a restored masterpiece spanning the entire 12-hectare complex.
Delegation Building
Locsin envisioned the Delegation Building’s massive form to appear floating above the ground, an effect now heightened by the restoration of the front lawn to its original pristine state.
Inside, the Delegation Lobby’s iconic 3,068 droplights were fitted with new bulbs, while the ceiling was painstakingly hand-painted with metallic powder to recapture its brilliance. Every detail, from the restored marble flooring to the laser-cleaned concrete walls, reflects the craftsmanship behind the lobby’s splendor.
The Delegation Lounge, traditionally reserved for world leaders and heads of state, was fully upgraded with re-upholstered furniture, modernized ceilings, walls, floors, lighting, and restrooms. Discreet security enhancements preserve its function as a distinguished VVIP space.
The interiors of the meeting rooms at the 3rd and 4th floors were transformed to harmonize with the PICC’s architectural character. The office spaces on the 5th floor were redesigned with contemporary furnishings and layouts.
Plenary and Reception Halls
Regarded as the PICC’s most celebrated venues, the Plenary and Reception Halls now combine historic character with advanced functionality. Designed to accommodate thousands of guests, both halls are now equipped with expansive LED screens, upgraded audio systems, and dimmable lighting to accommodate the demands of modern events.
The Plenary Hall features refurbished wood panels, ceilings, doors, and seating, with each chair fitted with new brass seat numbers. The Reception Hall radiates elegance with its polished globule chandeliers, gleaming ornamented ceilings, refreshed fabric walls, and refinished woodwork.
The renowned Grid steel sculpture by National Artist Arturo Luz and the architecture details at the Plenary Hall and Reception Hall lobby are enhanced by sophisticated lighting, while its ceiling, concrete walls, and marble flooring were rehabilitated.
The Secretariat Building
At the southern portion of the complex, the Secretariat Building welcomes visitors with a more spacious entrance and a brighter lobby. Its curved staircases were meticulously cleaned to reveal their original finish, while meeting rooms boast of re-varnished wooden lattice walls, refreshed carpets, and state-of-the-art LED walls. The banquet halls, fine dining restaurant, and cafeteria have all been given an updated look.
The Courtyard
The Courtyard now serves as an open-air gallery, anchored by another Luz sculpture — the Anito — at its center. The APEC sculptures, thoughtfully relocated from the front lawn, add to the artistic narrative. The 1976 pebble wash floor was revived, complemented by improved ponds and landscaping that frame the space. New features, including an infinity waterfall, modern lighting, and a 30-speaker audio system, make it an ideal venue for outdoor events.
A Living Museum
The artistic journey continues inside the PICC, where guests can appreciate a newly curated selection of artworks from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas collection. Permanent pieces, such as the Pagdiriwang mural by National Artist Jose Joya, were safeguarded during the renovation and now stand alongside new additions, with specialized lighting illuminating every detail of the paintings and sculptures across halls and meeting rooms.
Improved Wayfinding and Connectivity
Navigation and digital integration across the PICC were significantly enhanced. New brass wayfinding signage and themed design elements guide guests, allowing them to move through the complex with ease, while high-speed Wi-Fi throughout the venue ensures seamless connectivity for hybrid meetings and international events.
Now Open for Events
Starting October, the PICC is welcoming bookings for all kinds of gatherings: global conferences, conventions, meetings, graduation ceremonies, and personal milestones. As it embarks on this new chapter, the PICC solidifies its place at the heart of Philippine history and culture and sets the stage for the future of the country’s MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions) industry.
